Error cards are Pokémon TCG cards with printing mistakes, misprints, or other production errors that differ from the intended design. Common examples include ink blotches, missing holofoil, misaligned colors, misspelled text, wrong HP values, or missing illustrator credits.
Are Error Cards Supported in Dex?
Dex does not include error cards in its catalog. You cannot add them to your collection as their own entries, and they will not appear when searching or browsing expansions.
This applies to every type of error, including:
- Ink and printing errors (ink blotches, roller stains, missing ink)
- Holofoil errors (missing foil, holo shifts, wrong holo patterns)
- Text and stat errors (misspelled names, wrong HP formatting, incorrect attack damage)
- Miscut or misaligned cards
Even when an error card is widely known and commonly pulled, it is still treated as a production mistake rather than an official variant.
What About Banned or Corrected Artwork?
Some cards originally shipped with artwork or text that was later corrected by The Pokémon Company, usually due to legal, cultural, or design reasons. When this happens, Dex tracks only the corrected version of the card.
The original printings with banned or uncorrected artwork are treated the same as other error or unofficial variants and are not part of the Dex catalog.
Why Aren't They Supported?
Error cards are by nature inconsistent. New ones are discovered regularly, and many exist only in very small quantities. Because Dex relies on a structured, standardized catalog to keep search, pricing, and collection stats accurate, including error cards would introduce data that cannot be reliably identified or matched across collections.
What Can You Do With Them?
While error cards cannot be tracked as their own entries in Dex, you still have options:
- Add the closest standard variant of the same card to your collection
- Use Card Notes on that card to describe the error, where you pulled it, or its value to you
If you want to keep a visual record of an error card, Card Notes are the best way. They let you attach personal details to any card variant you own.
